Since her election to the legislature in 2024, Assemblymember Sade Elhawary has consistently voted for environmental justice and bold climate action.
Last year, she co-authored in the Assembly SB 982, which would have allowed the California Attorney General to file a civil lawsuit against fossil fuel companies for their role in creating climate disasters (instead of forcing taxpayers to foot the bill.) This year, Elhawary co-authored AB 1790 which seeks to make large corporations like fossil fuel companies pay their fair share of taxes to the state.
Assemblymember Elhawary believes that everyone has a fundamental right to clean air and water, nutritious food, and safe, sustainable homes and transportation. To achieve this, she has promised to target resources to environmental justice communities to:
- Phase out oil drilling and remediate existing and abandoned wells.
- Reduce health disparities.
- Green and cool neighborhoods (parks, greenspace, tree canopy, cool pavement).
- Upgrade water infrastructure.
- Expand emergency management.
- Increase access to solar and wind energy.
- Electrify truck fleets and public transit.
- Create pathways to careers in urban sustainability fields.
- Reclaim urban space for sustainable food purposes.
We are impressed with Assemblymember Elhawary’s passion for environmental justice, and her tenure in the legislature has demonstrated her commitment to climate-related causes. As such, we are glad to endorse Assemblymember Elhawary for re-election.
