SD 17: John Laird

John Laird

Senator John Laird was elected to the Senate in 2020 and has had a long and distinguished career in California public service. He’s served on the Santa Cruz City Council (including 2 years as Mayor), in the Assembly and as California’s Secretary of Natural Resources. He’s also worked as a congressional assistant, county government analyst, non-profit director, state board member, and environmental activist, each adding luster to his extensive resume.

John has carried many climate bills beginning with the landmark AB 32 (as a co-author) and addressing many different related topics such as: coastal resources and restoration, off-shore wind energy generation, battery storage facilities, sea level rise planning and adaptation, climate resiliency, and interim goals on the state’s march toward carbon neutrality. He has chaired the 12-member Senate working group on Climate Change and attended two of the last three annual UN COP meetings, believing California must take the lead and be a mentor for other states in the nation on climate change.

Climate Action California knows John Laird to be a long-time and proven Climate Champion — one California can count on again as we make the changes we need before the end of the decade.
